How COVID-19 Impacted Pinelands Players in 2020: A Look Back at Theatre in Lockdown
The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought Cape Town’s vibrant theatre scene to an abrupt standstill, with Pinelands Players facing significant challenges during this difficult period. As one of the Western Cape’s longest-running amateur theatre societies, we experienced first-hand how lockdown measures transformed the performing arts landscape.
The Sudden Stop of Live Theatre in 2020
When South Africa entered hard lockdown in March 2020, all of our planned productions were immediately postponed. This included:
-
Our annual Candlelight Supper Theatre event
-
Workshops for new members
-
Rehearsals for upcoming shows
-
All live performances scheduled for 2020
Cancellation of the 2020 CATA Awards
The Cape Amateur Theatre Awards (CATA), which normally celebrate excellence in community theatre, could not take place due to:
- No productions being staged during lockdown
- The impossibility of judging virtual performances
- Restrictions on public gatherings
This marked the first time in CATA’s history that the awards were suspended.
How Pinelands Players Adapted
While we couldn’t perform live, we found creative ways to stay connected with our members and audience:
- Virtual workshops for acting and technical skills
- Online script readings via Zoom
- Social media engagement to maintain our community
- Planning future productions for when restrictions lifted
The Financial Impact on Community Theatre
Like all amateur theatre groups, we faced significant challenges:
- Lost box office revenue from cancelled shows
- Ongoing venue rental commitments
- Storage costs for sets and costumes
- Membership retention during the hiatus
Looking Forward After the Pandemic
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic taught us valuable lessons about resilience in the performing arts. While it was undoubtedly the most challenging year in our 70+ year history, it reinforced our commitment to:
- Keeping amateur theatre alive in Cape Town
- Supporting our creative community
- Returning stronger than ever
Though the 2020 CATA awards couldn’t happen, we’re proud that Pinelands Players survived this difficult period and continues to bring quality theatre to Cape Town audiences today.
